Magnet Assessment Board

The role of the Magnet Assessment Board (MAB) is to issue a final evaluation of the characteristics and performance of the new HL-LHC and repaired or reconditioned LHC magnets, including their spares in view of their operational use in the IT String and the LHC accelerator. The mandate of the MAB is to:

  • Assure the completeness of documentation after production, as well as the documentation of measurements and acceptance tests for all magnets, in particular in cases where magnets are accepted for operation despite deviations from the baseline acceptance criteria.
  • In collaboration with MP3, perform an independent check of critical acceptance test results and potentially existing non-conformity reports for all types of HL-LHC magnets and reconditioned LHC magnets, and assess their suitability for reliable long-term operation in the LHC.
  • Assess, if needed and where compliant with the LS3 installation master schedule, possible optimisations of the sorting and allocation of the HL-LHC magnets over the available positions in the machine, considering the characteristics of the magnets and possible limitations and resulting constraints for their operation.
  • Request, if needed, competent bodies (working groups or task forces) to study and produce recommendations on specific issues of these magnets (electrical, magnetic, mechanical, geometrical…) related to the conformity to specification and the suitability for operation in the LHC. If needed, request additional measurements at warm or at cold. For the case of HL-LHC magnets, the assessment of the MAB will focus on the hardware suitability for machine operation. This complements the WP3 deliverables concerning the installation readiness reviews foreseen in the HL-LHC QA plan, which are meant for the contractual hardware acceptance.
  • Assess the definition and readiness of procedures and databases to generate ID Cards, and the completeness of geometric and magnetic measurements. Ensure the transition from magnetic and geometrical measurements to derived data for machine modelling. The MAB, within the scope of its mandate, submits its recommendations to the HL-LHC Project and ATS management and informs the HL-TCC and LMC committees.
